A warning about a high-risk sex offender soon to be released from prison. Gregory Gabert, 50, will be released Monday after serving more than 30 years in prison. Gabert has a lengthy criminal history, including multiple sex assaults and robbery charges. He was accused in of sexually abusing a year-old girl. WCAX News was there when police arrested him for kidnapping and rape.
One of the victims was a Champlain College student. We spoke with her on the phone but aren't revealing her name for safety reasons. That's when she says she begged the thenyear-old Gabert to spare her life. She says Gabert sexually assaulted her and let her go, but those moments of uncertainty and pain will follow her forever. After his arrest, Gabert was released on parole. During that time police say he assaulted two women and forced them into a car, leading police on a high-speed chase.
Investigators say when he's released, he'll be living in South Burlington. According to the state, Gabert poses a high risk of committing another crime. The department says if he does re-offend, he will most likely target adult women.
It's going to happen again. The woman is asking everyone to be on guard and aware of their surroundings. According to the Department of Corrections, Gabert has completed sex offender treatment.
